  3. Peter left that word hanging there, and 
  4. his hypnagogic dreaming veered away. At 
  5. this point, in truth, the shipboard     
  6. monitors finally initialized            
  7. communications with the Vega Project    
  8. Controller. But such communications took
  9. place at only light speed, and so it was
  10. not for another seventeen years that the
  11. report arrived in Earth space.          
  12.  
  13. The report arrived after the Migration  
  14. had already happened. There was no one  
  15. left to heed its meaning.               
  16.  
  17. Except for us.                          
  18.  
  19. There were one thousand one hundred and 
  20. twenty hibernating human beings on board
  21. Vega 26. Wanda Sixlove was only one of  
  22. them. The shipboard monitors had broad  
  23. discretion in decisions effecting the   
  24. welfare of the stacks, their life       
  25. support, the moment-by-moment decisions 
  26. effecting flight path and arrival       
  27. procedures.

  29. One decision had to do with whether     
  30. Wanda Sixlove's abnormal hypnagogic     
  31. activity consitituted a threat to the   
  32. overall colonization mission. She was   
  33. known to be suffering from PDD, that    
  34. years of hibernation might effect a cure
  35. by allowing the neurons to regenerate,  
  36. and that she had volunteered to try the 
  37. flight. A high-level subroutine was     
  38. built in to protect Wanda, so the       
  39. results of this long-term experiment    
  40. would become known.                     
  41.  
  42. For over a year, then, the ship noted   
  43. without alarm Wanda's active EEG, the   
  44. various expressions of her busy         
  45. hypnagogic life. Humans have great      
  46. difficulty remembering such hypnagogic  
  47. states when fully conscious, so her     
  48. activity was not deemed a threat at all.
  49.  
  50. In view of what happened to Vega 26 this
  51. was clearly a mistake.                  
  52.  
  53. Hindsight again.                        
  54.  
  55. The report shows that the ship supplied 
  56. Wanda with a slightly elevated profusion
  57. of soporifics and endorphins to calm    
  58. her. For some weeks the new regimen     
  59. seems to have helped. A significant     
  60. power drain was required to keep the    
  61. report flowing back to Earth, a power   
  62. drain the ship's monitor felt was       
  63. necessary, despite the damage to the    
  64. ship's overall energy budget.           
  65.  
  66. The dataflow still arrives, but Central 
  67. Processing feels it is almost finished. 
  68. There is little left for Vega 26 to tell
  69. us. But so much has happened! Yet there 
  70. is more in PsiLink.
