-
- Peter left that word hanging there, and
- his hypnagogic dreaming veered away. At
- this point, in truth, the shipboard
- monitors finally initialized
- communications with the Vega Project
- Controller. But such communications took
- place at only light speed, and so it was
- not for another seventeen years that the
- report arrived in Earth space.
-
- The report arrived after the Migration
- had already happened. There was no one
- left to heed its meaning.
-
- Except for us.
-
- There were one thousand one hundred and
- twenty hibernating human beings on board
- Vega 26. Wanda Sixlove was only one of
- them. The shipboard monitors had broad
- discretion in decisions effecting the
- welfare of the stacks, their life
- support, the moment-by-moment decisions
- effecting flight path and arrival
- procedures.
-
- One decision had to do with whether
- Wanda Sixlove's abnormal hypnagogic
- activity consitituted a threat to the
- overall colonization mission. She was
- known to be suffering from PDD, that
- years of hibernation might effect a cure
- by allowing the neurons to regenerate,
- and that she had volunteered to try the
- flight. A high-level subroutine was
- built in to protect Wanda, so the
- results of this long-term experiment
- would become known.
-
- For over a year, then, the ship noted
- without alarm Wanda's active EEG, the
- various expressions of her busy
- hypnagogic life. Humans have great
- difficulty remembering such hypnagogic
- states when fully conscious, so her
- activity was not deemed a threat at all.
-
- In view of what happened to Vega 26 this
- was clearly a mistake.
-
- Hindsight again.
-
- The report shows that the ship supplied
- Wanda with a slightly elevated profusion
- of soporifics and endorphins to calm
- her. For some weeks the new regimen
- seems to have helped. A significant
- power drain was required to keep the
- report flowing back to Earth, a power
- drain the ship's monitor felt was
- necessary, despite the damage to the
- ship's overall energy budget.
-
- The dataflow still arrives, but Central
- Processing feels it is almost finished.
- There is little left for Vega 26 to tell
- us. But so much has happened! Yet there
- is more in PsiLink.
